thanks for sharing, appreciated the detailed history. before social media you needed late night shows to help process the news of the day. nowadays people will tweet sharp and observant commentary on news happening in real time.

culture isn’t as gatekept by these institutions anymore which is good in that it lowers the barrier to entry. but sometimes institutional support can be nice, in the past landing a late night comedy spot would basically guarantee your career, whereas now it doesn’t “mean” as much anymore.

Same is happening to mass appeal talent discovery shows showing a variety of genres like Idol, Voice, and AGT. Tastes have narrowed, variety not appealing. New country music only singer-songwriter talent discovery show call The Road is great example
